Different Types of Hair Extensions Explained

There is no single best hair extension method. There are several, and they suit genuinely different hair types, budgets and routines. The method that is perfect for one client is the wrong choice for the next, which is why comparing them properly matters more than picking the one you have seen most often online.

Here is what actually separates them, without the marketing.

Tape-in and skin weft

Thin wefts of hair attached in pairs, sandwiching a section of your own hair between two adhesive tabs. They sit very flat to the head, which is why they are popular with finer hair. There is no bulk at the root to disguise.

Application is usually the quickest of the attached methods, commonly quoted at around 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The tabs are reusable in many systems, so the ongoing cost sits mostly in the appointment rather than in new hair each time.

Where they struggle: adhesive and oil do not mix. Heavy conditioner, oil treatments or leave-in products near the root will shorten their hold, and very active or frequently swimming clients tend to find they slip sooner.

Beaded weft and hand-tied weft

A row of beads or a track is fitted across the head and a continuous weft is sewn or attached to it. Because the weight is spread along a row rather than concentrated at individual points, this method carries volume well and is the usual choice when someone wants real thickness rather than just length.

Appointments are longer, commonly in the range of an hour and a half to two and a half hours, and the fitting is more technical.

Where they struggle: finer hair. A weft row needs enough of your own hair to anchor into and to cover the track. On hair that is too fine it can feel bulky, sit visibly, or pull.

Keratin bond and K-tip

Individual strands attached with a keratin bond, one small section at a time. Because each bond is separate, this method tends to give the most natural movement. Hair falls and parts more like your own.

That individuality is also the cost. Fitting a full head is the longest appointment of the three, often quoted at around two and a half to four hours, and the bonds are generally single-use, so refitting means new bonds.

Where they struggle: they ask the most of your brushing discipline. Individual bonds can matt at the root if shed hair is not brushed out properly.

Micro bead and nano bead

Individual strands secured with a small bead rather than adhesive or keratin. The appeal is that no glue or heat touches the hair, which is why they come up for clients with adhesive sensitivities or who simply prefer nothing bonded to their hair.

Where they struggle: beads are a mechanical grip, so fitting tension matters enormously. Fitted too tightly they are uncomfortable and put load on the root.

Clip-in and halo

Applied by you, removed by you, worn only when you want them. No attachment to your hair at all, so no move-up cycle and no ongoing salon commitment.

These are underrated. If you want length for an event, if you are unsure whether extensions suit your life, or if you want volume without a permanent commitment, this is the sensible place to start. And it is a genuinely good answer, not a lesser one.

Where they struggle: they are not everyday permanent length, and a halo in particular needs enough of your own hair to sit under and blend with.

The two numbers people confuse

This causes more disappointment than anything else in extensions, so it is worth separating clearly.

  • The maintenance interval is how often the extensions need moving back up as your hair grows. For most attached methods the industry works to roughly every six to eight weeks; bonded methods are often quoted longer, around three to five months between full refits.
  • The hair’s lifespan is how long the hair itself stays in good condition before it needs replacing. Quality Remy hair is commonly quoted at somewhere around nine to twelve months with good care.

They are not the same number, and they are not the same cost. Knowing both before you book is the difference between extensions feeling manageable and feeling like a surprise.

What none of them do

No method thickens your own hair, repairs damaged hair, or removes the need for maintenance. Any comparison that suggests one method causes no damage while the others do is selling you something. How extensions are weighted, fitted, maintained and removed matters far more than which of these you choose.

Which one is right for you

Honestly, that depends on your hair density, its current condition, how you wash and style it, how often you can realistically get back to the salon, and what you actually want, length, volume, or both. Which of these methods we recommend, and which we offer, is a conversation to have at consultation rather than a decision to make from a webpage.

Our salon is in Murarrie, easy to reach from Bulimba, Hawthorne and Balmoral. You can read more about our hair extension services or book a consultation to work out which method suits your hair.
