Nanoplasty vs Keratin Treatments: Key Differences Explained

Nanoplasty and keratin treatments are often talked about as if they are the same thing. They are not, and the difference affects both the result you get and how long it lasts.

This is a common point of confusion for clients visiting our Murarrie studio from across Brisbane, usually because they have been quoted for one and are not sure whether it is what they actually want.

Why they get compared

Both aim to reduce frizz, improve shine and make hair easier to manage. The confusion is understandable. But how they achieve that, and how much they change your hair, is quite different.

How nanoplasty works

Nanoplasty reshapes the hair using heat, mechanical tension and the temporary resetting of hydrogen bonds. The result is a genuinely smoother structure that gradually relaxes over time.

Importantly, it does not permanently alter the internal structure of your hair. The reshaping is real but temporary.

How keratin treatments generally work

Formulations vary significantly between brands, which is why results differ so much between salons. Broadly, many keratin systems:

  • Focus more on coating the surface of the hair
  • Use film-forming ingredients to smooth and seal the cuticle
  • Rely less on structural reshaping

The result is often softer and less dramatic, with a more coated or sealed feel.

The key differences

Nanoplasty

  • Heat-driven reshaping
  • Reduces curl pattern as well as frizz
  • Maintains natural movement
  • Longer-lasting smoothing effect

Keratin treatments, generally

  • More surface-level smoothing
  • Strong focus on coating and shine
  • Often softer, with less structural change
  • Can feel more coated

The structural difference that explains everything else

Nanoplasty affects hydrogen bonds, which are temporary. It does not restructure disulfide bonds, which are permanent.

That single fact is why the result fades gradually instead of growing out with a visible line, and why it is not comparable to a chemical relaxer. Which does break and reform those permanent bonds.

A word on how these treatments are marketed

You will see smoothing treatments described as “chemical-free”, “non-chemical” or similar. Nanoplasty is an acid-based system, so that description is not accurate. What is accurate is that it does not permanently restructure your hair.

You will also see wildly different claims about how long results last. Longevity depends far more on your hair’s porosity, how often you wash it and what you wash it with than on which brand was used.

If a smoothing treatment is promised to work identically on every head of hair, treat that as a warning sign rather than a selling point.

Which one suits you?

Nanoplasty tends to suit clients who want smoother, softer hair with movement, want to reduce curl or bulk, and want longer-lasting manageability.

A lighter smoothing service tends to suit clients who want frizz control only, do not want any change to their curl pattern, or have fragile or highly processed hair that needs a lower-heat approach.

Why the consultation decides it

Choosing between them depends on the result you want, the strength and condition of your hair, and your chemical history. We select the treatment based on what your hair can safely handle, not on what sounds most impressive.

Sometimes that means recommending the gentler option, and occasionally it means recommending neither for now.
